Aji Muhawarman, head of the ministry’s Public Communication and Service Bureau, said the regulation of e-cigarettes under Government Regulation No. 28 of 2024 will control e-cigarettes with provisions equivalent to conventional cigarettes.

In a written statement issued on Wednesday, he said the regulation includes age restrictions, advertising controls, and product content standards.

The new rules prohibit use by people under 21

According to the ministry, the regulation prohibits the use of e-cigarettes by individuals under 21 years of age and restricts advertising, including on social media.

In addition, vape products are required to comply with maximum nicotine content standards and are not allowed to use additives that have adverse health effects.

The regulation also requires pictorial health warnings

Muhawarman said the regulation also mandates pictorial health warnings and prohibits the use of e-cigarettes in smoke-free areas.

The Health Ministry said implementation is planned for July

Muhawarman said the regulation is planned to start being implemented in July in order to strengthen public health protection.

At the same time, the ministry is preparing derivative regulations in the form of ministerial regulations and ministerial decrees to serve as implementation guidelines.

The ministry is also conducting public outreach

Muhawarman said the ministry is also carrying out outreach and education on the health impacts of e-cigarettes in cooperation with health organizations and professional associations.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Faisal Yunus of the Department of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, said stronger regulation is necessary to protect public health.

Experts say access and youth-oriented marketing still need more attention
