According to information published by IQOS Japan, IQOS opened its first global flagship, IQOS Flagship Ginza, in Tokyo on September 4, 2026, while simultaneously launching a Ginza-exclusive IQOS ILUMA i PRIME set limited to 1,814 units.

The opening upgrades IQOS’ physical presence in Ginza from a conventional retail store into a broader brand-experience destination. The former IQOS Store Ginza, which had operated since March 2017, closed on August 30, 2026.

IQOS Opens Its First Global Flagship in Ginza

IQOS describes the new location as its first “Global Flagship.”

IQOS Flagship Ginza occupies the first and second floors of the Ginza YOMIKO Building at 1-8-14 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, and operates from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Compared with a conventional IQOS store, the flagship places greater emphasis on brand experience and member services.

According to IQOS, the interior draws inspiration from Japanese nature, seasonal change and traditional craftsmanship while incorporating contemporary digital design.

The entrance features a lighting installation by Japanese artist Takahiro Matsuo, while product-display elements combine traditional kumiko woodworking with 3D design.

The store also includes a members-only Premium Lounge featuring a digital screen spanning approximately 270 degrees of view and displaying changing natural landscapes. Eligible IQOS members can use IQOS products in the space while having coffee or tea.

The concept extends the role of the store beyond device sales, trials and after-sales support toward brand presentation, membership engagement and physical consumer experience.

Ginza-Exclusive ILUMA i PRIME Launches Alongside Store

To mark the opening, IQOS introduced the IQOS ILUMA i PRIME Ginza Limited Model Set.

The package combines a specially designed IQOS ILUMA i PRIME device with two Yamanaka lacquerware glasses.

The device features an “Oasis Blue” finish. IQOS says the design draws inspiration from natural beauty and the idea of creating a place of respite within the city.

The set is priced at JPY11,980, equivalent to approximately US$77 based on the September 6 exchange rate.

It is sold exclusively at IQOS Flagship Ginza and is not offered through other IQOS stores or the official online channel.

1,814 Units Reference the Ginza Address

The Ginza edition is limited to 1,814 sets.

IQOS says the number derives from the flagship’s address at 1-8-14 Ginza.

Each device carries an individual serial number, reinforcing the location-specific and collectible positioning of the release.

The principal changes from the standard IQOS ILUMA i PRIME concern design, limited-edition numbering and bundled accessories rather than a new heating platform.

Public information does not indicate a new heating system or major additional device functionality, making the Ginza edition more accurately described as a location-exclusive design set rather than a new generation of IQOS hardware.

PMI Employee Says More Than 500 People Lined Up Overnight

Beyond official information about the store and product, the opening also appears to have generated significant initial foot traffic.

According to a September 6 LinkedIn post by Philip Morris International Sales Strategy Consultant Yuji M., more than 500 people lined up from the night before the opening of IQOS Flagship Ginza, with the queue extending around the surrounding block.

The figure came from a PMI employee’s personal social-media account rather than a formal PMI or IQOS announcement and should therefore be understood as information provided by a participant rather than an official company metric.

If representative of opening-day demand, however, the turnout suggests the Ginza-exclusive ILUMA i PRIME served not only as a commemorative product but also as a tool to drive consumers to the new flagship.

The limited-edition device is therefore closely tied to the location, store concept and physical retail experience rather than functioning simply as another SKU.

From Retail Store to Brand Experience

IQOS also built a series of launch activities around the new flagship.

From September 4 through September 13, the location is hosting a 10-day Celebration Week, including a collaboration with Japanese pâtissier Sadaharu Aoki that offers limited sweets and beverage experiences to visitors and eligible members.

The program further illustrates that IQOS Flagship Ginza is designed to operate beyond conventional hardware retail.

Traditional IQOS stores have primarily focused on device sales, trials, after-sales service and consumer support. The new Global Flagship adds art installations, digital experiences, a premium member lounge, location-exclusive hardware and collaborative events.

From a commercial perspective, limited-edition hardware is becoming a traffic-generation tool within flagship retail, rather than merely an extension of the product portfolio.

Japan Remains an Important Showcase Market for IQOS

The decision to locate IQOS’ first global flagship in Ginza also carries broader market significance.

Japan has long been one of the earliest and most developed major markets for heated tobacco and an important market for IQOS product launches, limited editions and physical consumer-experience initiatives.

Rather than simply refurbishing its previous Ginza store, IQOS has elevated the location to its first global flagship and paired the opening with exclusive hardware, member facilities, Japanese craftsmanship and launch programming.

At 1,814 units, the limited ILUMA i PRIME release is small in volume.

Its broader industry significance lies in how IQOS is increasingly connecting hardware, flagship retail, local culture, membership and scarcity-driven marketing.

As heated tobacco hardware moves further into mature-market competition, differentiation may increasingly extend beyond device technology and consumables to include flagship retail, member experiences, city-specific products and physical community engagement.

Australia’s One Nation Proposes 75% Tobacco Tax Cut, Says Lower Prices Could Hit Illicit Market
Australia’s One Nation Proposes 75% Tobacco Tax Cut, Says Lower Prices Could Hit Illicit Market
Australia’s One Nation party has proposed cutting tobacco excise by 75%, arguing that lower legal cigarette prices could narrow the gap with illicit tobacco and reduce demand for black-market products. The proposal comes as Australia continues expanding enforcement against illicit tobacco supply chains through border controls, retail inspections and organised-crime investigations. Supporters argue high taxes have contributed to illicit-market growth, while opponents warn that lower tobacco prices could undermine public-health goals. The proposal is a party policy position and has not been adopted by the Australian government.
