According to Livedoor News, Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) has announced a collaboration between its heated tobacco brand Ploom and musician Ichiro Yamaguchi. The project introduces a series of limited-edition front panels designed for the Ploom AURA device.

Limited Hardware Release and Distribution Structure

JT began sales of two limited-edition front panels — Brass and Kutani Ware — on January 27, 2026. The products are available through Ploom Shops and the official CLUB JT online store.

Three additional designs — Verdigris, Kintsugi, and Rosewood — are being offered via a lottery system for Ploom CLUB members. The collaboration also includes smoking accessories produced with established Japanese craft houses Kaikado and Kamide Choemon Kiln.

According to the original report, the design concept centers on the theme of “aging and attachment,” incorporating material textures inspired by objects associated with the artist’s daily life.

No changes to the heating system or core hardware specifications were announced in connection with this limited-edition release.

Broader Context: Global Design Collaborations Under the Ploom Brand

The Yamaguchi collaboration aligns with a series of international design partnerships undertaken by JT’s international division, JTI.

Collaboration with Ora ïto

JTI has partnered with French designer Ora ïto on special editions of the Ploom X Advanced device. Official Ploom websites and JTI press materials confirm launches of the Ora ïto “Special Edition Red” in markets including Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, Switzerland and the UAE.

In January 2025, JTI and Lagardère Travel Retail presented a limited-edition activation at Rome Fiumicino Airport, as reported by Moodie Davitt Report. The event included retail installations and personalization displays targeting adult consumers.

Regional Customization Initiatives

In Central Europe, JTI has collaborated with Czech designer Jan Černý in projects presented at the Designblok festival in Prague, according to official Designblok materials. These initiatives combine physical installations with localized creative content.

Product Development and Technical Positioning

According to JTI’s official product information, Ploom AURA incorporates the company’s “Smart HeatFlow” heating system and introduces a selectable multi-mode heating feature. The device also includes what JTI describes as “CleanSeal” technology, designed to reduce tobacco residue inside the device.

These specifications represent an evolution from the earlier Ploom X Advanced platform, based on official JTI disclosures.

Corporate Investment Strategy

JTI has publicly stated that it plans to invest approximately ¥650 billion in reduced-risk products (RRP) between 2025 and 2027. This information is drawn from official JTI press releases.

The company positions Ploom AURA as a central component of its next-generation heated tobacco portfolio.

Industry Perspective

The recent artist collaborations suggest that JT is placing increasing emphasis on exterior customization and design partnerships as part of its brand development strategy in the heated tobacco category.

Whether such collaborations translate into measurable market share impact remains to be seen, particularly in markets where competition from other heated tobacco brands is established.
