City of Vincent Considers Further Restrictions on Smoking and Vaping
City of Vincent in Australia has banned smoking in five central areas, considering further restrictions due to rising e-cigarette popularity.

According to a report from Townsville Bulletin on January 12, the City of Vincent in Australia has implemented smoking bans in five central areas by the end of 2022. The city council is now considering further restrictions as e-cigarettes have become more popular than traditional cigarettes.

Vincent Mayor Alison Xamon has stated that the use of e-cigarettes is becoming "increasingly popular" compared to traditional cigarettes, and the city council will consider establishing new smoke-free zones in the next public health plan.

Hammond stated that these measures will go through community consultation, and the $100 fine is sufficient. If smokers refuse to extinguish their cigarettes in front of staff, they may also face an additional $200 fine.

The Australian Alcohol and Drug Foundation reported that in 2019, 5% of young people aged 18 to 24 used e-cigarettes. By the 2022-2023 fiscal year, this figure had skyrocketed to 21%, while the percentage of those under 14 years old using e-cigarettes had risen from 2.5% to 7% during the same period. Nearly one in ten young Australians aged 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes on a daily basis in the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

In Australia's various states and territories, smoking and e-cigarette usage in public places are covered by a series of laws and regulations. A new law in South Australia will take effect in 2024, prohibiting smoking and e-cigarette usage in public places and imposing on-the-spot fines of up to $105 Australian dollars.

If prosecuted, individuals suspected of breaking the law may face fines of up to 750 Australian dollars. In Victoria, smoking is prohibited within 4 meters of all entrances and within 10 meters of outdoor recreational areas. In New South Wales (NSW), laws prohibit smoking and the use of e-cigarettes in all indoor public areas and many outdoor areas.

In Western Australia, the City of Fremantle became the first local government area in the state to establish a smoke-free zone in the "cappuccino strip" in 2008.
