The Economic and Public Health Impact of Smoking Ban
Experts predict a comprehensive smoking ban in the UK could bring £10bn economic value annually.

Key points:

  • The total smoking ban is expected to generate £10 billion in economic value and create 135,000 job opportunities in the UK annually.
  • The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will gradually raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco, prohibit e-cigarette advertising, and protect future generations from the harm of smoking.
  • Health organizations and the Minister of Public Health support the smoking ban, but smoking advocacy groups are concerned that this will push tobacco sales into the hands of criminal organizations.

According to a report by Mirror on March 26th, experts state that a total smoking ban will greatly boost the UK economy, leading to approximately £10 billion in added value each year. The report suggests that once smoking is completely eliminated in the UK, an estimated 135,000 new job positions will need to be created.

This conclusion is based on the assumption that smokers redirect their funds towards other goods and services. Since tobacco production in the UK is almost nonexistent and very few jobs rely on the tobacco industry, this economic growth expectation has sparked controversy. The report, representing the authors of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), points out that when people purchase things other than tobacco, it is more stimulating for economic growth compared to continuing to purchase tobacco.

The report suggests that a shift in consumer spending could create the equivalent of 135,000 full-time jobs and increase the UK's annual economic output by nearly £10 billion.

The report's author, Howard Reed, stated that,

Reducing smoking is not commonly seen as a direct impact on national growth strategy, but analysis shows that aside from improving health, it can also bring about significant social benefits.

At the time of the release of this report, The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is entering its final stages of parliamentary review. If the bill becomes law, individuals born after January 1, 2009, will be prohibited from smoking as the legal age for purchasing tobacco will gradually increase. Additionally, the bill will completely ban e-cigarette advertisements and sponsorships, including prominent locations visible to children and youth, such as buses, cinemas, and store windows, to align with tobacco restrictions.

Sarah Sleet, CEO of Asthma and Lung UK, stated that,

The passing of the The Tobacco and Vapes Bill in the lower house is an important step in our journey towards a smoke-free future. This is the most significant health reform in decades, protecting future generations from the deadly effects of addiction.

Dr. Ian Walker, Executive Director of Policy and Information at Cancer Research UK, noted that,

Now is the time to take action to address the UK's leading killer. Supporting the Tobacco and Vapes Bill is supporting national health, and I urge all members of parliament to stand on the right side of history.

The Minister of Public Health, Ashley Dalton, stated that,

Smoke-free is not only a public health priority, but also a significant economic opportunity. Smoking causes over 21 billion pounds in losses for the UK every year, including 18 billion pounds in productivity losses. Our Tobacco and Vapes Bill will gradually phase out the sale of tobacco products, leading us towards a smoke-free nation.

A survey conducted by the smokers' organization Forest has shown that 39% of people support a smoking ban, while 36% of people support keeping the legal age for purchasing cigarettes at 18 years old.

The head of Forest, Simon Clark, commented that,

Gradually banning smoking cannot stop young people from smoking, it will only drive tobacco sales into the hands of criminal gangs.
