Hong Kong to ban possession and use of e-cigarettes in public places starting mid-2026, aiming to protect youth from harm.

According to a report by 8World on February 10th, Hong Kong, China will soon ban the possession and use of e-cigarettes in public places starting in mid-2026.

Since April 2022, Hong Kong has banned the import, production, and sale of e-cigarettes, but they are still quite prevalent. The Director of Health of the Hong Kong Department of Health, Dr. Constance Chan, stated in a television program that, in order to protect young people, the authorities believe it is time to strengthen regulation of e-cigarettes.

According to Lu Chongmao, the government plans to first enact legislation to prohibit the possession and use of e-cigarettes in public places. After the public gradually adapts to this ban, it will be further expanded to more locations.

Lu Chongmao also pointed out that the authorities' goal is to submit the relevant policies to the Legislative Council for review in April this year. In addition, the Hong Kong SAR government has also proposed legislation to ban flavored tobacco products, such as mint and fruit-flavored cigarettes.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government hopes to reduce the local smoking rate from 9.1% two years ago to 7.8% through a series of measures.
