Malaysian Parliament Successfully Passes GEG Bill

Malaysia's Parliament successfully passed the Public Health and Tobacco Control Act 2023, which includes a ban on selling tobacco products to minors.

According to a report by Malaysia's national news agency on November 30th, the Malaysian Parliament successfully passed the Public Health and Tobacco Product Control Bill of 2023.

Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, the Minister of Health, has proposed a bill that includes provisions to prohibit the sale and purchase of tobacco products, tobacco alternatives, and the provision of any services related to smoking to minors.

At the same time, the bill has removed a provision that was established for the Generation Ending Smoking Act (GEG), which prohibited the sale of tobacco products and cigarettes, as well as the smoking of individuals born on or after January 1, 2007.

The bill was first introduced on Tuesday (November 28th) and underwent a second reading on November 29th, comprising a total of 54 provisions. It was deliberated by 27 parliament members.

Zahliha expressed gratitude to the former Health Minister for researching tobacco issues and drafting legislation.

She expressed her gratitude, stating, "They have made efforts to address the general tobacco issue and draft specific bills, for which I (Malaysian Parliament) am deeply grateful.

The Malaysia Parliament has also passed the Food (Amendment) Act 2023, which seeks to amend the 1983 Food Act in alignment with the Public Health and Tobacco Control Act 2023.
