PMI Opens Generative AI Center in Portugal to Support Global Operations
According to information released by Portugal’s Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) in July 2026, Philip Morris International (PMI) has established a global Generative Artificial Intelligence Factory (GenAI Factory) at its Portuguese subsidiary Tabaqueira. The center will support PMI’s global operations by developing and deploying AI solutions focused on industrial process optimization, data analytics, operational automation and AI application development. The initiative strengthens Portugal’s role in PMI’s global technology and innovation network.

According to information released by Portugal’s Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) in July 2026, Philip Morris International (PMI) has selected its Portuguese subsidiary Tabaqueira to host the company’s global Generative Artificial Intelligence Factory (GenAI Factory). Located at Tabaqueira’s Albarraque facility, the center will support PMI’s global operations through the development and deployment of AI solutions.

The initiative forms part of PMI’s broader digital transformation strategy and strengthens Tabaqueira’s role within the company’s global technology and innovation network.

PMI Builds Global Generative AI Capability Center

PMI said the GenAI Factory will serve as a global artificial intelligence capability center responsible for developing and implementing generative AI solutions across different business areas.

The center is led by Tomi Virkki, PMI’s Head of AI, with engineering and technology specialists supporting AI development, application deployment and solution implementation.

Depending on project requirements, the initiative may involve around 100 AI specialists. The operating model combines PMI’s internal strategic capabilities with technical support from external technology partners.

AI Applications Target Manufacturing and Operations

PMI said tools and applications developed by the GenAI Factory will support multiple areas across the company.

Key application areas include:

● industrial process optimization;

● data analytics;

● operational automation;

● development of AI-based applications.

For a global tobacco company transitioning toward smoke-free products, AI capabilities are becoming increasingly important for improving manufacturing processes, operational efficiency and global business management.

Portugal Strengthens Role in PMI Technology Network

The launch of the GenAI Factory in Portugal is part of PMI’s broader expansion of technology and shared service capabilities in the country.

PMI currently operates two global service hubs in Portugal:

● PMI Tech Hub Portugal;

● Finance Hub.

PMI Tech Hub Portugal is the company’s second-largest technology hub globally, with more than 250 specialists in artificial intelligence, software engineering, cybersecurity and data management.

The Finance Hub supports operations across 180 markets.

Around 26% of Tabaqueira employees currently perform global roles, highlighting Portugal’s growing strategic importance within PMI’s global organization.

Tobacco Companies Accelerate Digital Transformation

Global tobacco companies have increasingly invested in artificial intelligence, automation and data analytics to improve manufacturing, supply chains and business operations.

PMI’s establishment of the GenAI Factory in Portugal reflects the broader trend of tobacco companies integrating AI capabilities into their global operating models.

For the tobacco and nicotine industries, AI adoption may expand into manufacturing optimization, supply chain management, market analysis and internal operational efficiency.

Cochrane 2026 Update Adds Nine Trials, Keeps High-Certainty Finding That Nicotine E-Cigarettes Improve Quit Rates Over NRT
Cochrane’s 2026 update of its living review on electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation included 80 randomized controlled trials involving 29,861 adult smokers, with nine trials added in this update. The review retained its high-certainty conclusion that nicotine e-cigarettes increase smoking cessation rates compared with nicotine replacement therapy. In absolute terms, about 10 in 100 people using nicotine e-cigarettes may quit smoking for at least six months, compared with about 6 in 100 using NRT. The review found no clear difference in serious adverse event rates between the two groups, while longer-term safety and the relative effectiveness of newer device types remain less certain.

Philip Morris International has published its first report aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, bringing its electronics supply chain and the use and end-of-life stages of smoke-free devices and consumables into its nature-related assessment. PMI said its smoke-free business accounted for about 42% of total net revenues in the second quarter of 2026. The report says non-circular electronic products, particularly single-use items, can increase consumption of limited natural resources and also details an IQOS repair pilot. A 2040 circularity scenario tests assumptions including a 50% reduction in product waste-related costs, 10% raw-material savings and a 25% substitution rate for refurbished products versus new products.

The technology forms salts between 6-methylnicotine and alicyclic carboxylic acids, with granted claims extending to oral products, atomization substrates and electronic atomization devices. Applicant-generated tests reported differences in oxidation stability, in-vitro cytotoxicity and aerosol heavy-metal performance compared with selected benzoate or lactate controls. HG Innovation is directly linked to the broader IMiracle and ELFBAR business network.

Alimentation Couche-Tard said U.S. same-store sales in its “other nicotine products” category grew at a double-digit rate in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, led by nicotine pouches, while overall U.S. same-store merchandise revenues increased 1.7%. Eleftheria (Ria) Kioupritzi, a biopharmaceutical professional with more than 15 years of experience, has joined Philip Morris International as Director Scientific Affairs within Corporate Affairs. She previously served at Roche as Senior Scientific Communications Director for Neuroscience and Rare Diseases and worked extensively in spinal muscular atrophy. Her earlier career also covered competitive intelligence, clinical and regulatory monitoring, pipeline development and launch preparation. During her time working in Roche's SMA field, Evrysdi passed through several U.S. FDA milestones, including its initial approval, an expanded indication for younger infants and approval of a tablet formulation. Public records do not show that Kioupritzi herself led the FDA submissions.
