Singapore Steps Up Vape Crackdown After National Day, 18 Arrested in Two-Day HSA Operation
The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore conducted a two-day enforcement operation, seizing 82 e-vaporiser devices and arresting 18 individuals. The move follows Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s announcement that vaping will be treated as a drug issue, with some devices found to contain dangerous substances such as etomidate and ketamine.

According to The Straits Times on August 20, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) carried out a two-day sting operation in Raffles Place and Haji Lane, seizing 82 e-vaporisers, including 62 heated tobacco sticks, and arresting 18 individuals aged between 24 and 48. Under Singapore law, anyone caught vaping faces a maximum fine of S$2,000 (US$1,554).

 

Although Singapore has banned vapes since 2018, seizures and offences have continued to climb. Data shows that from January 2024 to March 2025, the HSA confiscated S$41 million (US$31.78 million) worth of vaping products—nearly five times the total value seized from 2019 to 2023. During the same period, more than 17,900 people were caught for possessing or using e-vaporisers.

 

In his National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the government would take much tougher action against vaping, treating it as a drug issue. He highlighted that many vapes contain harmful substances such as etomidate, while “Kpod” vapes have been found to contain ketamine and methamphetamines, posing even greater dangers.

 

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has announced that etomidate will be classified under the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA), meaning offenders could face mandatory rehabilitation or harsher penalties.

 

In a recent joint operation, authorities seized more than 280 e-vaporisers from pubs, nightclubs, and KTV lounges across the island. Out of 640 people checked, 115 were found to be involved in vape-related offences, including five individuals suspected of possessing Kpods.

 

The HSA has urged the public to report offences via hotline or its online portal, assuring that those who voluntarily seek support to quit vaping will not face prosecution. At the same time, HSA confirmed it is collaborating with Hong Kong’s Department of Health to share intelligence and expertise, and has begun recruiting investigators dedicated to cracking down on Kpod-related crimes—receiving more than 800 applications to date.

New York vape distributor Ecto World, which operates as Demand Vape, hired political consultant Roger Stone to lobby the Executive Office of the President on regulation of vaping and related products while facing state enforcement and multiple lawsuits. Public lobbying disclosures show that Ecto World paid at least $300,000 for the work through June 30, 2026. Separately, New York State announced in March that more than 28,500 pounds of vaping products tied to the company had been seized, while New York City and the state have pursued legal or enforcement actions. Public records do not show that the lobbying directly changed any specific regulatory or enforcement outcome.

South Korean tobacco company KT&G launched the limited-edition lil HYBRID 3.0 Misty Rosé Edition II on September 30, 2026, following the original Misty Rosé Edition introduced in November 2025. The new release comes in two pink finishes, Bloom Rosé and Viva Rosé, each priced at 88,000 won. Both versions initially went on sale through the lil Store online shop and lil MINIMALIUM flagship stores. From October 7, Bloom Rosé became available at approximately 1,500 lil Station retail outlets nationwide. The release retains the existing lil HYBRID 3.0 hybrid heated tobacco platform, with changes focused on exterior design and distribution.

A PMI-commissioned survey found that only 8% of respondents across four Latin American countries were familiar with nicotine pouches. A separate KPMG study estimated illicit cigarette consumption at 77 billion sticks across 11 markets in Latin America and Canada in 2025.

UK-listed consumer goods group Supreme plc says it continues to expect FY27 trading to meet market expectations as the Vaping Products Duty takes effect on October 1, while maintaining a comparatively positive view of the new tax and compliance regime. Supreme has said the framework could increase compliance complexity for smaller operators and contribute to market consolidation, while its manufacturing, compliance and distribution scale may allow it to gain share. Its 88Vape brand will retain its value positioning.

Philip Morris Malaysia Again Meets Religious Authority Over Cigarette Alternatives as Perlis Mufti Responds on Halal Criteria
Philip Morris Malaysia Managing Director Naeem Shahab Khan met Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin on September 17 and presented the company's shift from conventional cigarettes toward alternative products. The mufti said a product could be considered halal if it is clean, its side effects are not harmful or can be controlled, and it does not involve excessive waste. His remarks did not mention IQOS or any other specific PMI product and did not amount to a new product-specific religious ruling. It was at least the second publicly reported engagement between Philip Morris Malaysia and a Malaysian religious institution over cigarette alternatives within six months.
