Spain Bans Sale of Flavored Heated Tobacco to Curb Smoking

Spain approves ban on heated tobacco products and flavored additives in a bid to curb smoking rates.

According to a January 16th report from Agence France-Presse, the Spanish government approved an ordinance on January 16th banning the sale of flavored heated tobacco products as part of its efforts to curb smoking behavior.

Heated tobacco products (HTPs) release nicotine from tobacco leaves through a process called "heat-not-burn," without burning or charring them. This alternative to traditional tobacco is gaining popularity but is often confused with vaping, in which e-cigarettes heat e-liquid that may contain nicotine, but not tobacco leaves.

The regulation also mandates that packaging of heated tobacco products must display the same health warnings as other tobacco products, as stated by the Ministry of Health in its announcement. Additionally, the regulation prohibits the use of flavorings in other tobacco products, such as cigarette filters and rolling papers.

Despite a significant decline in smoking rates in Spain in recent decades, the number of regular smokers remains relatively high. According to the latest data from the World Health Organization, approximately one-fourth of Spanish adults (26%) use tobacco daily, compared to the global average of 22.3%.
