Alarming Increase in Smoking Rates Among Youth in Luxembourg
Luxembourg Cancer Foundation study reveals rising smoking rates, especially among youth, prompting new government regulations on tobacco products.

According to a report from RTL.Today on May 22nd, a new study released by the Luxembourg Cancer Foundation shows that smoking remains common in Luxembourg, particularly among young people, whose smoking rates are on the rise.

A study found that 27% of residents in Luxembourg smoke, with two-thirds of them claiming to smoke every day. The proportion of male and female smokers is almost equal. Traditional cigarettes account for 23% of all tobacco consumption, while shisha use has doubled in the past year, reaching 22%. E-cigarettes make up 17% of consumption, with the highest concentration of use among young people aged 16-24.

The newly appointed head of the foundation, Margot Heirendt, emphasized the need to strengthen measures specifically targeting young people.

Furthermore, the study points out that the number of users of new tobacco products such as nicotine pouches is increasing. In response to this issue, the Luxembourg government is planning to enact new regulations to limit the nicotine content of nicotine pouches and prohibit the use by individuals under the age of 18. Consumption will also be restricted in certain public places.
