【2Firsts News Flash】According to a report from talkingretail on July 28, three shops were closed by the Trade Standards team of the Barnet City Council in the UK after seizing nearly £50,000 (approximately $60,000) worth of illegal tobacco and e-cigarette products on an enforcement day.

The closure notice has been delivered to the tobacco shop, which has a complex hydraulic lift installed beneath the floor.

The device is operated by a small remote control and includes a series of shelves filled with smuggled cigarettes.

After selling contraband cigarettes to undercover officers four times in one week, this store had the illegal products confiscated twice.

When the police officers completed their work, they confiscated 1400 packs of smuggled cigarettes, nearly 1000 disposable e-cigarettes, and a batch of shisha tobacco from the store.

The owner of the tobacco shop has now been served a three-month closure notice.

Trade standards officials seized contraband cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookahs, and hand-rolled tobacco valued at £47,773 (approximately $61,150) in a raid on Friday, May 30th.

Barry Rawlings, Council Leader of the Barnet City Council and Cabinet Member for Economy and Efficiency, stated:

“These businesses completely ignore the law. We have repeatedly found them engaging in illegal goods trading. We will not tolerate such behavior from Barnett Enterprises. Our trade standards officials regularly conduct test purchases to ensure that stores in the area are trading fairly and not engaging in illegal or counterfeit goods trading. Barnett should be a safe haven for everyone, and merchants should not make quick money at the expense of residents. We hope that our actions will show residents and the local community that we are addressing organized crime in a proper manner.”

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer’s proposed FY2027 budget would significantly raise cigarette and nicotine product taxes to help close a $500 million budget gap and generate new revenue. The cigarette tax would rise from $2.10 to $3.60 per pack, with increases on moist snuff, e-liquids and other tobacco products. Supporters say the move is justified, while small businesses warn of potential sales losses.

PMI Faces Setback in India: Global Regulatory Fragmentation Complicates Its Smoke-Free Transition
India has reaffirmed its 2019 ban on e-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices, effectively blocking Philip Morris International (PMI) from launching IQOS in the country despite years of lobbying. Together with Taiwan, China’s conditional opening of heated tobacco products, and Japan’s planned 2026 excise tax hikes, these moves highlight increasingly divergent national regulatory pathways—an external uncertainty shaping PMI’s smoke-free growth trajectory.
