EU Proposal: Public Smoking Ban to Extend to New Tobacco Products

The European Parliament is set to discuss a comprehensive smoking ban, proposing the prohibition of all tobacco products, including vapes and heated tobacco products, in certain public places.

According to Blitz on November 23, the European Parliament will discuss a proposal to completely ban the use of all tobacco products in certain public places on Wednesday, November 27. Currently, this ban only applies to regular cigarettes and is limited to specific outdoor areas such as children's playgrounds.

The main goal of this proposal by the European Parliament is to enhance protection for EU citizens, reduce their exposure to secondhand smoke and aerosols (including e-cigarettes). This amendment will expand the scope of the ban to include new tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco.

The European Commission has recommended that member states ban the use of all tobacco products in specific outdoor spaces to reduce the risk of passive smoking. These areas include children's playgrounds, amusement parks, designated areas in restaurants/cafés, public transportation, healthcare and educational institutions, and workplaces.
