Free Smoking Cessation Program Now Available in Ireland
HSE encourages smokers to quit by offering free smoking cessation aids including nicotine replacement therapy.

According to a report by Irish media outlet Limerick Post at a certain time, the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) is actively encouraging people who quit smoking by offering them free smoking cessation aid packages.

A spokesperson from the health service department stated, "Many individuals attempting to quit smoking do not receive the necessary support and treatment methods, such as smoking cessation medications, that provide the greatest chances of success. HSE is here to help you quit smoking by offering free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) along with other tried and tested support options.

The smoking cessation service provided by the HSE is free throughout the year and offers personalized, evidence-based plans tailored to individual needs. It provides a range of support options, which can be combined according to individual preferences, such as:

Online personalized quit smoking program tracks its progress; face-to-face and group support from the community; SMS or telephone support available through the toll-free line 1800 201 203; free "Quit Smoking Kit" to aid in preparation for quitting; free provision of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) with usage guidance; daily advice and support from individuals who have successfully quit smoking or are currently attempting to quit on the "You Can Quit Smoking" Facebook page.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends several strategies for quitting smoking. These include seeking support from others, including HSE's smoking cessation services, rather than fighting the battle alone. The advice is to focus on maintaining a smoke-free status every day until reaching the milestone of 28 days, as this significantly increases the chances of quitting permanently. Additionally, the use of smoking cessation medications such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is suggested as a safe, effective, and clinically viable method to overcome initial cravings and navigate the first 28 days of quitting.

Dr. Paul Kavanagh, the Public Health Medicine Advisor in charge of Ireland's Smoke-Free Plan, has clarified that Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is both safe and effective. "We know that NRT is very safe and also effective," he said. These medications are strictly regulated by the Irish Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).

We are encouraged to see an increasing number of smokers using NRT to help them quit smoking. We have been making efforts to improve the accessibility and availability of this life-saving medication. Smokers, those looking to quit, and the healthcare professionals supporting them can have full trust and confidence in the safety and effectiveness of NRT.

Some smokers may be curious about using e-cigarettes or e-liquid to help them quit smoking. We do not have sufficient trust and confidence in the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes as a means of quitting smoking, so we recommend using NRT to assist them in their quit attempts.
