According to a report by the Yorkshire Post on January 10th, a shop in Rotherham, England, had its license revoked after illegal tobacco, tobacco products, and e-cigarettes were discovered on the premises.
The trading standards officials of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) gained access to the store after experiencing suspicious purchases of counterfeit cigarettes by customers. On February 21, 2023, they conducted a surprise inspection and discovered illegal cigarettes and tobacco "hidden in a toolbox behind the counter," accompanied by illicit e-cigarettes displayed on the counter.
They also discovered that the store was "being operated by individuals who were unable to work legally in the UK." Officials confiscated 3,569 illegal cigarettes, 43 packets of tobacco, and two e-cigarettes from the premises.
Employees from the Trading Standards Agency and police officers from the South Yorkshire Police Department returned to this store on September 7th and discovered another employee who was "not supposed to be working in the UK". Officials conducted a search of the premises and found 229 illegal e-cigarettes, 1,700 illicit cigarettes, and 16 packs of cigarettes in a black bag and shopping bag located behind the counter.
The shop owner claimed in an email that due to a family emergency, he had to leave the country, and the person he had arranged to manage his store had abused it for their own personal gain and engaged in illegal activities.
In October, a licensing officer from RMBC purchased alcohol during a visit to the store, which was considered "illegal" due to the non-functioning CCTV cameras. The officer's report highlighted that the store owner displayed a complete lack of cooperation in store management and continued to violate terms, conditions, and restrictions of the license despite being given appropriate advice.
