North Caucasus customs authorities seized 2.3 million packs of illegal tobacco products in 2023, an 80% increase from 2022.

Recently, according to reports from the Russian media outlet Stav, the customs authorities in North Caucasus seized 2.3 million packages of illegal tobacco products in 2023. The illegal products were discovered by the personnel during inspections conducted on roads, in shops, and at the SKFO market.

According to the press department of the North Caucasus Customs, the illegal tobacco quantity in the region has increased by 80% compared to the year 2022.

According to a report, four major seizure operations in 2023 resulted in the confiscation of 1.8 million packs of tobacco products. During one of these operations, unmarked cigarettes were discovered at Piattigorsk market. Additionally, finished tobacco products originating from Turkey were found in a warehouse in Nalchik, with a total of 500,000 packs being in violation of labeling regulations.

The department has stated that illegal products have been found in vehicles in North Ossetia and Dagestan. All seized goods have been confiscated, and criminal proceedings have been initiated against individuals involved in the transportation and sale of illicit tobacco products.
