Lithuania Parliament Passes Revised Tobacco Control Law

On June 6th, the Lithuanian parliament passed a revised Tobacco and Related Products Control Law, with 112 MPs voting in favor, 5 voting against, and 6 abstentions. The amendment will undergo further review on June 20th.

The main originator of this revision, Vytautas Kernagis, stated that it aims to curb retailers from selling e-cigarettes and related accessories in ways to circumvent relevant bans. According to him, flavored cigarettes and e-liquids contain sugar or sweeteners to enhance the taste, and these ingredients can be detected through testing in Lithuanian laboratories.

Kernagis has stated that the ban on flavored e-cigarettes issued about a year ago has been disregarded by manufacturers. To prove this point, regulatory agencies have sent e-cigarettes to Denmark to undergo testing, which the distributors of these products are unhappy with after seeing the results.

At present, the regulation prohibits the supply of e-liquids containing vitamins or substances that are harmful to health. It is also prohibited to import cigarettes and e-liquids containing caffeine, taurine, and other stimulants, as well as the use of dyes in the e-liquids to prevent the release of harmful substances.
