Louisiana House Passes Vape Flavor Ban Bill
Latest News Louisiana committee votes to ban flavored nicotine products in e-cigarettes due to concerns over youth usage.

Recently, the Louisiana House Judiciary Committee passed a bill that would ban flavored nicotine products in e-cigarettes by a vote of 7-3.

The bill known as HB 179 was drafted by Representative William Wheat, who expressed concerns over the increasing usage of e-cigarette products among young people, describing it as being at epidemic levels.

Whitney stated that the previous state assembly passed a bill prohibiting the sale of tobacco and nicotine products to individuals under the age of 21, but it has not deterred young people from obtaining these products.

He continued to say, "This bill is not a perfect solution to the problem, but it is a first step in our work."

He mentioned that his main concern was the flavoring additives in electronic cigarettes.

MP Mike Johnson expressed his support for the bill, stating that e-cigarette companies are attempting to get the younger generation addicted.

However, the lawmaker Nicholas Muscarello Jr is concerned about whether cigarette flavors will also be banned, such as mint flavor.

Whitney stated that the flavor of these types of cigarettes will not be banned, but he noted that some neighboring states have already passed legislation prohibiting such flavors.

On the other hand, Heather Hutton, who represents electronic cigarette store owners, expressed opposition.

She stated that her shop has a history of over 20 years and only 2% of their sales come from menthol or tobacco products.

She believes that law enforcement should hold young people accountable instead of banning such products from legitimate businesses.

She also stated that the proposed bill would harm the interests of smokers who are trying to quit.
