【2Firsts News Flash】According to a report by 7News on July 30th, Montgomery County, Maryland announced that it will use over $1.3 million in funding to support youth mental health and combat substance abuse. This funding comes from a settlement between the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services and e-cigarette company JUUL, along with their nicotine leader Altria.
Funds will be allocated to Elite Football Youth Development Academy, Identity Inc. organization, and Hope Tree Association. County Executive Marc Elrich stated:
“When we hold JUUL and Altria accountable, this funding must be used to help the young people who have been harmed by the actions of these companies. We support grassroots organizations that are trusted by the youth in the community, especially in areas most heavily impacted by the e-cigarette epidemic. In this way, we are starting to turn the tide and decrease the issue of youth e-cigarette use.”
Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Kisha Davis pointed out:
“The use of e-cigarettes and substances among teenagers remains a significant public health issue, especially in our most vulnerable communities. These innovative and culturally responsive programs will provide education and support while empowering young people to take control of their own health.”
