Philip Morris Romania Introduces ZYN Nicotine Pouches to Expand Smoke-Free Product Line
PMI Romania has added ZYN nicotine pouches to its smoke-free product portfolio, aiming to offer adult smokers a more diverse range of alternatives and accelerate the transition to a smoke-free future.

Philip Morris International’s Romanian subsidiary is accelerating its move toward a smoke-free future by adding ZYN nicotine pouches to its portfolio of smoke-free products, according to a report from Business Review on November 26.

While PMI’s stance is that the healthiest option for smokers is to completely quit nicotine and tobacco, data shows that fewer than ten percent of smokers successfully quit each year. In response, PMI has developed a range of science-based smoke-free alternatives for adult smokers who may not quit but are seeking a less harmful option than traditional cigarettes.

The head of the smoke-free products division at PMI Romania, Marek Gebski, said: "Oral smokeless products are an important addition to our portfolio of smoke-free products and they will help us take significant steps in our efforts to continue accelerating the transition to the smoke-free future. We believe that no single smoke-free product can satisfy the preferences of all adult smokers, that is why a diverse and scientifically substantiated portfolio is necessary to support smokers in their decision to quit smoking cigarettes for the benefit of their own health."

"In 2022, PMI acquired Swedish Match, a global leader in oral nicotine products with a decades-long legacy in replacing Sweden’s cigarette consumption with snus and ZYN. Sweden has now the lowest smoking rate in Europe, from around 35% in 1980 to less than 6% nowadays. Furthermore, public health data show that the reduction in smoking prevalence is associated in Sweden with a much lower rate of smoking-related diseases and mortality caused by these than in any other country in the European Union. We are now excited to be bringing their expertise to Romania," he said.

The South Korean government rejected allegations that Chinese synthetic-nicotine e-liquids were linked to about 16 trillion won in tobacco tax evasion, saying China does not ban synthetic nicotine exports and the estimate is difficult to verify, while acknowledging that pre-law synthetic-nicotine inventory is effectively difficult to tax.

Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke described the tobacco industry as a “criminal” sector with “no future” during an appearance on VRT’s current affairs program Ter Zake. His comments came after Belgium’s Constitutional Court ruled that a government ban on cigarette and vape sales in supermarkets was discriminatory because it allowed small shops to sell tobacco products while prohibiting larger retailers from doing so.
