PMI Appoints Christos Harpantidis as Senior Vice President
Christos Harpantidis appointed as PMI Senior VP of Global External Affairs effective May 1, 2024, succeeding Grégoire Verdeaux.

According to a report from Business Wire on March 26th, Philip Morris International (PMI) announced that Christos Harpantidis has been appointed as the company's Senior Vice President for global external affairs, effective May 1, 2024. Harpantidis will report directly to CEO Jacek Olczak in his new role.

Since joining PMI in 2003, Harpantidis has held several positions, including formulating the commercialization strategy for smoke-free products in Lausanne, Switzerland, and serving as the Chairman and General Manager of Papastratos Company in Greece. Most recently, he has been serving as Vice President of PMI for the Southeast European region. Throughout his career at PMI, Harpantidis has been dedicated to expanding the company's smoke-free consumer base, increasing the brand portfolio, and promoting regulations that align with PMI's smoke-free goals.

This personnel change is to replace Grégoire Verdeaux, who is leaving at the end of the month to pursue other career opportunities. During his tenure, Verdeaux expanded the company's global tobacco harm reduction strategy and worked with the team to establish influential policy positions, earning regulatory support in line with the smoke-free vision.

Asia Pacific Harm Reduction Alliance Criticizes Singapore’s Policy: Confusing Illegal “Drug Pods” with Legal E-Cigarettes May Fuel Black Market Circulation
The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) has expressed concern over Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s recent announcement to treat e-cigarettes as a “drug issue” and impose imprisonment penalties. CAPHRA stated that this policy confuses illegal products containing etomidate with legal nicotine devices, goes against harm reduction science, deprives adult smokers of access to safer alternatives, and may instead fuel black market circulation.
