Russian region moves to hike school smoking fines to $30
A regional parliament in Russia has submitted a bill to the State Duma proposing increased fines for smoking in schools and kindergartens, raising penalties from the current 500-1,500 rubles ($5-15) to 2,000-3,000 rubles ($20-31).

Russia's State Council of Bashkortostan submitted a bill to the National Duma on October 29 proposing stricter penalties for smoking in schools and kindergartens, Runews 24 reports.

The Russian government had previously expressed its support for the proposal. The bill proposes increasing the fine from the current 500 to 1500 rubles ($5-15) to 2000 to 3000 rubles ($20-31).

Konstantin Tolkachev, the chairman of the State Duma, noted the seriousness of the problem of underage smoking, which has raised concerns about the health of the younger generation. Statistics show that about 60% of high school students in Russia smoke. Meanwhile, a survey of adult smokers showed that more than half of them started smoking at school.

The State Duma also emphasized that the use of e-cigarettes was previously considered smoking behavior, which is why their use in public places was restricted. In addition, stricter measures need to be taken in schools.
