Public Consultation on Tobacco Legislation Amendments in Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland and Labrador government to hold virtual public consultation on tobacco legislation amendments, including raising legal age to 21.

According to a recent report by Gov.NL, the provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada will hold a virtual public consultation meeting on legislative amendments related to the purchase of tobacco and related products on August 22 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.


The topics to be discussed at the conference include:


Prohibit the sale of tobacco products to individuals born after a specific date; raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21; ban flavored e-cigarette products; implement other enforcement measures, including prohibiting the sale of tobacco products through vending machines.


Data shows that the peak age for people to start smoking is between 15 and 17 years old, with the likelihood of starting smoking decreasing significantly after the age of 16.


Furthermore, other jurisdictions including Prince Edward Island are also considering similar legislation.

A coalition of health and child rights advocates in the Philippines said it supports Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa’s call to raise the legal age restriction for vape and tobacco products from 18 to 25.
