South Carolina Senate Proposes FDA to Create Approved Vape List
WACH reports rise in e-cigarette use among Columbia, South Carolina students, prompting calls for FDA action and penalties.

According to WACH, the issue of students using e-cigarettes on campus in Columbia, South Carolina is becoming increasingly serious. Senators Hutto and Thomas Alexander expressed their desire to create a list of approved e-cigarette products through the FDA and establish a penalty list for those who violate regulations.

 

State Senator Brad Hutto said, "Especially this year, school officials and resource officers have all said that this phenomenon is becoming rampant." School districts in the area are being forced to find new ways to combat the growing trend of students using e-cigarettes on campus, a problem Hutto believes should not exist in the first place. "They shouldn't be selling e-cigarette products to minors, yet these products are finding their way into schools and into the hands of children, to the point where some resource officers say they have to even station personnel in the bathrooms.

 

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of young people using illegally flavored e-cigarettes has surged by over 2000%.

The estimated costs are mainly linked to inventory adjustments, retail storage changes and the resources required for businesses to understand and implement the new requirements. The measures form part of the UK’s broader efforts to tighten vape regulation, particularly around product displays, packaging and sales practices.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has named Bret Koplow permanent director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, ending his period as acting chief. Koplow has spent years working on tobacco regulation, law and policy inside the FDA and, while serving as acting director, pushed for faster PMTA reviews and nicotine pouch review pilots. HHS also said CTP will prioritize innovation and access to less harmful alternatives for adult smokers while continuing efforts to protect youth.

Australia-China Operation Dismantles Tobacco Smuggling Network: 112 Containers, 60 Arrests and A$92 Million in Illicit Tobacco
According to The Maritime Executive on August 19, 2026, the Australian Border Force (ABF) and China’s Anti-Smuggling Bureau of General Administration of China Customs worked together to dismantle an international illicit tobacco smuggling network targeting Australia. According to information released by ABF on August 20, sustained information sharing and cooperation led to investigations into 112 shipping containers, with 91 found to contain illicit tobacco. Authorities seized more than 60 million cigarettes and 60 kilograms of loose-leaf tobacco, representing more than A$92 million in unpaid duties. More than 60 people suspected of involvement in the network were arrested in China.

Australia’s tobacco excise debate is increasingly exposing differences within the governing Labor Party. New South Wales Labor Premier Chris Minns reaffirmed on September 8 that he supports reducing tobacco excise, arguing that current tax settings are pushing consumers toward cheaper black-market cigarettes. U.S. President Donald Trump has named Pastor Darrell Scott to serve as an adviser on tobacco health issues on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee to the Director. Trump said Scott would focus on the burden of tobacco-related disease and help examine ways to protect Americans from dangerous tobacco products while supporting solutions that reduce harm. Scott’s public career has largely centered on faith leadership, community advocacy and politics.
