Successful Operation by DOF Seizes Illegal Goods in Brazil

Brazilian police seized five vehicles carrying approximately 300,000 Brazilian reais (about $61,000) worth of illegal goods in Ponta Porã as part of a border protection operation.

According to a report by Brazilian media outlet Midiamax on January 9th, the Brazilian Department of Border Operations (DOF) successfully carried out an operation on the MS-164 highway in Ponta Porã, a city located 312 kilometers from Campo Grande. The operation resulted in the interception of five vehicles carrying approximately 300,000 Brazilian Real (around 61,000 US dollars) worth of illegal goods.

This operation is part of the "Border and Boundary Guardians Program" and the "Agate Western Frontier II" operation.

In an operation, the DOF police set up a checkpoint on a rural road near Copo Sujo overpass, successfully intercepting three vehicles. Two additional vehicles, appearing to be traveling together, abandoned their journey upon learning of the situation and changed direction towards Paraguay. During the ongoing pursuit, one suspect abandoned their vehicle and escaped into the forest, while another driver was successfully intercepted.

The Department of Finance (DOF) police found 2,300 packs of cigarettes, 300 packs of flavored tobacco, 350 packs of e-cigarettes, and 88 tires inside the vehicle. Four suspects, three males aged 20, 21, and 26, and one 56-year-old female, have been arrested. All the seized illegal goods will be transferred to the Federal Revenue Office in Ponta Pora for further processing. This successful operation signifies a significant blow to cross-border crime, highlighting the fruitful collaboration between the DOF and the military.
