Thailand Introduces New Law Prohibiting Recreational Use of Marijuana
Thailand's new government is pushing for a law banning recreational use of marijuana, according to US CNN on January 10th.

According to a report by CNN on January 10th, the newly appointed government in Thailand is actively working towards implementing a new law to prohibit the recreational use of marijuana.

The Ministry of Health in Thailand released a new draft law on Tuesday (January 9th) that stipulates the banning of marijuana use in public places. The bill also explicitly prohibits the advertising and promotion of products such as cannabis buds and extracts. Additionally, the proposed legislation outlines severe penalties for violators, including hefty fines and a maximum prison sentence of one year.

A report highlights that previous lenient regulations have fostered a marijuana industry catering to both locals and foreign tourists across the nation. However, ever since the conservative coalition government took office at the end of last year, they have consistently vowed to tighten marijuana regulations, restricting its use solely for medical purposes.

A new law indicates that marijuana and its related products will only be used for medical and health purposes. This aligns with the commitment made by Thailand's new Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, in September this year, to "revise" regulations related to marijuana in the next six months.

Despite previous lenient regulations that deemed the use of marijuana in public places illegal, a new proposal has further prohibited advertising related to marijuana flowers and extracts. However, similar proposals failed to pass during parliamentary approval in November last year.

Tawis has repeatedly stated in media interviews that he considers drug abuse a "major issue" in Thailand, emphasizing the need for stricter measures to combat the problem of cannabis abuse.

2FIRSTS EXCLUSIVE|China Breaks Up $6.8 Million Illegal Hookah Tobacco Operation as Market Expands
Chinese authorities have dismantled an illegal hookah tobacco operation worth more than 46 million yuan ($6.8 million), detaining five foreign suspects and seizing over 500,000 boxes of tobacco paste. The case comes as hookah expands across China’s nightlife sector and attracts overseas operators, including former vaping entrepreneurs. It also raises a central regulatory question: whether waterpipe tobacco will follow China’s private-sector e-cigarette licensing model or be reserved for the state tobacco system, as with nicotine pouches, in the years ahead.
