Importance of Tobacco in Greece: Chairman of S.E.K.E. S.A. Group Addressing JTI
According to Greek media Kathimerini, Costas Karamanlis, Chairman of the S.E.K.E. S.A. Group, addressed Japanese Tobacco International's activities in Greece.

According to Greek media outlet Kathimerini, Costas Karamanlis, the Chairman of the Board of the Greek Tobacco Producers Cooperative Association (S.E.K.E. S.A.), gave a speech at an event organized by Japan Tobacco International (JTI) in Kilkis, Greece.

 

Karmanlis highlighted the historical significance of tobacco as a Greek economic product and welcomed the activities carried out by JIT in the region of Katerini. He emphasized that tobacco is a pillar of the Greek economy, and the commercial activities of JTI contribute to local economic growth, exports, and job creation.

 

He also stated that currently, JTI's influence in Southeast Europe is steadily expanding.

China’s Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute develops end-to-end heated tobacco analysis to trace aerosol compound origins
The Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute of China National Tobacco Corporation has filed a patent application for an end-to-end method to analyze the migration and transformation of chemical compounds in heated tobacco products. Using GC-Orbitrap/MS non-targeted analysis, the method compares tobacco substrate and aerosol samples to distinguish compounds transferred directly from the substrate from those newly formed during heating, while also calculating transfer rates. In an example involving nine heated tobacco products, the patent identified 17 newly formed thermal decomposition compounds and 38 transferred compounds.

JTI Makes Third Bet on South Korea as Ploom AURA Enters a Market Dominated by lil and IQOS
Japan Tobacco International is stepping up its heated tobacco push in South Korea with Ploom AURA. Since its official launch in April 2026, the device's limited First Edition and Glacier White version have sold out, while distribution has expanded across Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province and airport duty-free channels. The rollout marks JTI's third major attempt to build a stronger heated tobacco position in South Korea, following Ploom TECH in 2019 and Ploom X Advanced in 2024. At the group level, JT plans to invest about ¥800 billion, approximately $5 billion, in reduced-risk products from 2026 through 2028, with heated products and Ploom identified as its primary investment priority.

JT’s Ploom heated-tobacco volumes rose 43.5% in the first half of 2026, while combustibles still represented about 97% of its tobacco volume and remained the main earnings base. In Japan, reduced-risk products now account for 48.7% of industry shipments, shifting competition from category adoption towards brand share, pricing and consumer retention. JT’s results offer a revealing case of a traditional tobacco company pursuing a prolonged, dual-track transformation.
