UK PM Facing Policy-Making Dilemma after Disposable Ban
UK government officials urge a more rational and open-minded approach to policy-making, highlighting the importance of understanding risks and potential opportunities.

According to a report by the British media outlet iNews on January 29th, Mark Walls, a government official in the UK, emphasized the crucial role of understanding risks in political decision-making. However, he noted that we often tend to focus too much on the negative consequences that unknown factors may bring and overlook the costs of inaction.

In policy-making, we tend to be more conservative, fearing the possibilities of future opportunities and thus missing out on the chance for national progress. According to Walls, the government should adopt a more open-minded approach by embracing the voices of scientists, mathematicians, and entrepreneurs, rather than succumbing to panicked decision-making.

He gave an example to highlight that the United Kingdom has displayed an open attitude towards e-cigarette policies by approving a specific brand of e-cigarette as a smoking cessation aid, successfully reducing the health risks associated with smoking. However, he expressed regret over the government's decision to ban disposable e-cigarettes and similar products, believing that this move could negate the previous successful efforts made regarding the issue of e-cigarettes.

The rationale behind the government's decision is the increasing usage of e-cigarettes amongst teenagers. However, Wallis argues that addressing this issue may require a stronger emphasis on law enforcement and parental education, rather than a simple ban.

He urges policymakers to be more rational and open-minded when facing risks and opportunities, and to avoid falling into narrow-minded thinking. Although the government has received support from voters on certain bans, Walls warns that there may be more divisions within the Conservative party as some members oppose excessive government intervention. He ultimately emphasizes the need for more rational and comprehensive considerations in policy-making, rather than simple bans.
