Allegations of Malaysian Ministers and PM Hindering Anti-Nicotine Legislation

Former Malaysian health minister Khairy Jamaluddin accuses two cabinet ministers and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of obstructing a bill to ban nicotine products for minors born after 2007.

According to a report by Malaysian media outlet Focus Malaysia on November 16, former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has accused two cabinet ministers and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of obstructing a proposed bill aimed at prohibiting individuals born after 2007 from purchasing or consuming nicotine products.

Despite there being limited official updates regarding the bill, the Health Inspection Agency has stated that the cabinet has decided to remove the provisions related to age in the 2022 Tobacco Products and Smoking Bill (GEG).

Attorney General Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh believes that the GEG clause violates Article 8 of the Federal Constitution.
