Australia's South Australia Implements Public Area Smoking Ban
Starting March 1, smoking and e-cigarettes will be banned in certain public areas in South Australia, with fines for violators.

Recently, according to the Australian news site The Australian, starting from March 1st, certain public areas in South Australia will completely prohibit tobacco and e-cigarettes, with penalties imposed on violators.

 

People caught smoking in prohibited areas will face an on-the-spot fine of $105, and those prosecuted could be fined up to $750. The new smoke-free zones for outdoor public places include:

 

  • Outdoor public swimming facilities and areas within 10 meters of the entrance; 
  • Within 50 meters of warning flags on the beach and within 5 meters of a pier; 
  • Schools and childcare facilities and areas within 10 meters of the entrance; 
  • Entrances to shopping centers, government and commercial buildings, and non-residential buildings within 10 meters; 
  • Public hospitals and medical facilities, private hospitals, and areas within 10 meters of the surrounding area; 
  • Major event venues announced under the Major Events Act of 2013; 
  • Sports areas and spectator areas within 10 meters of the area during sporting events for those under 18 years of age.

 

Simultaneously launched an advertising campaign called "Fresh Air" to explain the details of the new regulations. Another advertising campaign called "The Truth About E-Cigarettes" is also set to launch in mid-March.

 

Chris Picton, South Australia's Minister for Health, stated that smoking has become the biggest preventable killer and cause of diseases, while the alarming rate of e-cigarette use and addiction among young people is concerning. He said, "South Australians expect to be able to enjoy smoke-free environments in public places, including outdoor swimming pools and children's sports facilities, free from harmful tobacco smoke and e-cigarette vapor.
