Austria to Expand Smoking Ban in Outdoor Areas
Austria plans to expand smoking ban in outdoor public places, including children's playgrounds and leisure areas, by 2023.

The Austrian government plans to expand the country's smoking ban in 2023 to include "more outdoor public places," according to a report by The Local.

A new amendment to the Tobacco and Non-Smokers Protection Act will add public places, such as "children's playgrounds and areas for young people's recreational activities", to the list of smoking prohibited areas. The amendment will also regulate the increasingly popular use of nicotine pouches among young people.

In 2019, a ban on indoor smoking was implemented, including in bars and restaurants.

The newly revised amendments will undergo review in early 2023.

The statement followed a South Korean media report that interpreted BAT's broader withdrawal from selected Vapour markets as a full exit from South Korea. Meanwhile, Philip Morris International launched VEEV inPRIME in the country in June and began expanding distribution to around 14,000 convenience stores and other retail channels in July. The contrasting moves highlight differing investment strategies as South Korea's regulated vaping market evolves.
