Brazil's Health Regulatory Agency Anvisa Cancels Visit to BAT Amid E-Cigarette Discussion Concerns
Brazil's health regulatory agency, Anvisa, cancels visit to British American Tobacco to avoid e-cigarette authorization discussion.

According to Jornaldebrasilia on January 20th, the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has canceled its planned visit to British American Tobacco (BAT) in London to avoid being misunderstood as reopening the discussion on e-cigarette authorization in Brazil.


This visit, originally scheduled from January 28th to 31st, includes two directors and two staff members.


Anvisa stated in a declaration: "Anvisa's regulatory process is guided by transparency and predictability, ensuring that its regulatory agenda is widely known by society." According to Anvisa, the cancellation of this visit was to avoid the public from misunderstanding the organization's goals in regulating tobacco products.


Currently, Congress is fiercely debating the possibility of lifting the ban on e-cigarettes in Brazil. Anvisa updated its regulations in April 2024 and decided to continue prohibiting these devices as a preventive measure until there is sufficient research proving their safety.


Anvisa reiterated that e-cigarette devices are banned in Brazil, and currently there is no new evidence sufficient to reopen discussion on the topic.
