FDA to Collaborate with Law Enforcement Agencies to Combat Illegal E-Cigarettes
Illegal e-cigarette influx in US market highlighted by Senator Ashely Moody and FDA nominee Marty Makary.

Key points:

1. United States Senator Ashley Moody pointed out that illegal e-cigarettes are flooding the American market.

2. FDA nominee Marty Makary proposed utilizing the cooperation between the FDA and law enforcement agencies to combat illegal products.

According to Florida Politics on March 10, U.S. Senator Ashley Moody highlighted a key issue she focused on during her tenure as Florida's Attorney General — the impact of illegal e-cigarettes on the U.S. market — at the confirmation hearing for Marty Makary's appointment as FDA Commissioner.

Moody pointed out that illegal e-cigarette products are flooding the US market, especially flavored e-cigarettes sold in convenience stores, which not only lack regulation but are also completely illegal in some cases.

"All of the manufacturers there of these chemically ridden vapes have now flooded our market and now are addicting our children..."

Markari admitted that many new e-cigarette stores have also appeared in his community, but he has not thoroughly researched these products.

“We have no idea what’s in these products, and public health is not even going to be able to study them because it takes so long for public health research to catch up, but it’s very concerning and it’s not right that they’re banned."

Markley proposed using the FDA's inspection and investigative offices, in conjunction with the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies, to crack down on these illegal products.

After the resignation of FDA Commissioner Robert Califf, Sara Brenner, senior policy advisor, has been appointed as acting commissioner until a permanent replacement is confirmed.

Previously, President Donald Trump had nominated Dr. Martin Makary, a pancreatic surgeon from Johns Hopkins University, to be the new FDA commissioner. (Related reading: Trump nominates surgeon Dr. Makary as FDA commissioner, saying he can "correct the course")
