Controversy Surrounding New Zealand's E-Cigarette Quit Smoking Program
New Zealand Health Ministry to provide e-cigarette starter kits to aid adult smoking cessation, drawing criticism from health advocates.

According to NZ Herald on January 2nd, Casey Costello, the Deputy Minister of Health in New Zealand, announced that starting next week, e-cigarette starter kits will be provided to smoking cessation services nationwide to assist adults in quitting smoking. However, this move has been criticized by health advocates.

Letitia Harding, CEO of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation, expressed concerns about the controversial practice of using e-cigarettes to quit smoking.

These products have not yet been approved for smoking cessation by the World Health Organization, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration), or the New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority (Medsafe). Therefore, distributing these medications as therapeutic products without going through proper rigorous consultation procedures is truly bizarre. They are set to launch this plan next week, which seems too insane.

Harding noted that the plan lacks details and simply involves moving people from one product to another without a clear exit strategy.

Which products will actually receive funding, and how will they actually break free from long-term nicotine dependence on e-cigarette products? In the next decade or few decades, we may see a "New Zealand without e-cigarettes.

Research | Swedish Study Finds Oral Lesions in 79% of Examined Nicotine Pouch Users, With Distinct Tissue Responses
A new Swedish study found oral mucosal lesions in 79% of examined nicotine pouch users and 89% of tobacco-derived snus users, with different tissue-response patterns between the two categories. For manufacturers and regulators, the findings shift attention toward product formulation, flavouring, pouch materials and local oral exposure, not only whether a product contains tobacco. The study found no higher prevalence of caries or periodontal disease, but it could not establish causality, long-term outcomes or differences between individual products or designs.

China’s Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute develops end-to-end heated tobacco analysis to trace aerosol compound origins
The Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute of China National Tobacco Corporation has filed a patent application for an end-to-end method to analyze the migration and transformation of chemical compounds in heated tobacco products. Using GC-Orbitrap/MS non-targeted analysis, the method compares tobacco substrate and aerosol samples to distinguish compounds transferred directly from the substrate from those newly formed during heating, while also calculating transfer rates. In an example involving nine heated tobacco products, the patent identified 17 newly formed thermal decomposition compounds and 38 transferred compounds.

According to Haypp’s 2026 UK Nicotine Report, women are a key growth driver in the UK nicotine pouch market.
