According to Agence France-Presse, on May 14th, the Costa Rican Ministry of Health announced plans to ban the sale and use of e-cigarette liquids containing synthetic nicotine and marijuana compounds, as well as all other products containing similar marijuana compounds. This new regulation will come into effect as the government amends regulations related to these products.
The Ministry of Health stated in a declaration that the resolution will prohibit the "sale, use, marketing, advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of e-cigarette liquid containing synthetic nicotine and cannabinoids." Additionally, it will also impact products containing liquid with cannabinoids because "they pose health risks.
This clause will apply when the government is preparing to reform the laws regarding regulation in this area and such devices. According to the data from this set, a total of 3,170 people have received a "diagnosis related to e-cigarettes" at public health centers in Costa Rica since 2021, with 40% of them registered in 2024.
The National Tobacco Control Network (Renata) has responded positively to this decision in a statement, emphasizing their support for the government's new regulations. They believe, "Costa Rica may be on the brink of the next e-cigarette epidemic." The World Health Organization (WHO) warned in a report in December 2023 that "urgent control measures need to be taken for e-cigarettes" because "they are not helpful for quitting smoking, and there is shocking evidence that they are harmful to health.
The World Health Organization stated in a report that e-cigarettes containing nicotine are harmful to health and highly addictive.
