Illegal Sale of Tobacco Products Leads to Revocation of Business License

According to local British media, the Rotherham Advertiser, a store located on William Road, Eastwood in the city of Rotherham, has had its business license revoked by the Rotherham City Council Licensing Sub-Committee for concealing and selling illegal cigarettes, tobacco, and e-cigarettes.

The Trading Standards Department of Rotherham initiated a search warrant on the aforementioned store on February 21, 2023. Prior to this, their undercover operation confirmed that the store was selling counterfeit cigarettes. During the investigation, they discovered illicit cigarettes and tobacco in a toolbox behind the counter, as well as illegal e-cigarettes on display in the store. Additionally, it was found that the store was being operated by individuals who were not authorized to work in the UK.

Officials have seized a total of 3,569 illicit cigarettes, 43 packages of tobacco, and two e-cigarettes during the investigation. On September 7, 2023, the trade standards department and South Yorkshire police conducted another inspection of the shop and discovered an employee who should not be working within the UK.

During the second search of the store, the authorities discovered 229 illegal e-cigarettes, 1,700 illegal cigarettes, and 16 packets of loose tobacco inside a black travel bag and shopping bags located behind the counter.

According to information obtained, the holder of the store's license has stated in an email that they had to leave the UK due to a family emergency. They argue that the personnel left behind to run the shop have been misusing it for "personal gain and illegal activities.

However, reports from the licensing department indicate that license holders have no full control over the management of the shops, despite having received relevant suggestions, and are still continuing to violate the terms, conditions, and limitations of the licenses.
