Maybe using 6-methyl nicotine

A key feature of Kumi 6 Kurve 35 e-cigarette is its claimed nicotine concentration of 5% synthetic nicotine (SFN) on various e-cigarette retailer websites such as northdisposable and myvpro. The e-cigarette website Element Vape also describes the product as using a new type of nicotine replacement called NONIC6.

The individuals familiar with the nicotine industry informed 2FIRSTS that "NONIC6" may be a brand's proprietary name, with its actual component being "6-Methylnicotine." Chemical information for 6-Methylnicotine is as follows: CAS No. 101540-79-8, English name (S)-6-Methylnicotine, molecular formula C₁₁H₁₆N₂.

At a trade show in TPE in early 2024, industry insiders introduced 2Firsts to 6-methyl nicotine as an intermediate product of synthetic nicotine, which can create effects similar to nicotine when consumed. Currently, some Chinese e-liquid companies have begun to prepare for this technology, but due to concerns about public opinion and regulatory risks, related products have not yet been launched.

When the US Food and Drug Administration answered Reuters' questions about 6-methyl nicotine and other nicotine replacement products, it stated in a release:

Despite the need for further research, some newly emerged data suggests that these nicotine analogs may be more effective than nicotine.

The FDA stated that it is considering the use of such synthetic compounds from a "whole agency perspective" and will utilize all resources to protect adolescents from potential harm from other health products.

Many e-cigarettes and e-cigarette pods contain traditional nicotine extracted from tobacco leaves, whereas 6-methyl nicotine is completely synthesized in the laboratory using chemicals. Research on 6-methyl nicotine is currently limited, making it difficult to draw clear conclusions about its health effects or addictive potential. It is reported that several Chinese companies hold patents related to 6-methyl nicotine.

It is worth noting that the Kumi 6 Kurve 35K is not Kumi's first product to use NoNic6. Previously, distributors have posted on social media introducing:

Kumi Six is a product that is powered by NoNic6, a non-nicotine compound that provides a similar level of satisfaction as traditional nicotine.

Kumi Six is powered by NoNic6, a non-nicotine ingredient that closely mimics the satisfaction of traditional nicotine.

At the TPE 24 trade show, 2FIRSTS interviewed the American e-cigarette company Charlie's Holdings Inc. The company's e-cigarette brand, Spree Bar, launched a new vapor product called Metatine at the trade show. Metatine is a substance similar to "6-methyl nicotine," but it is not nicotine itself.

Charlie's Holdings Inc. President Henry Sicignano introduced a new product called Metatine to two supremes, stating that it is neither synthetic nicotine nor tobacco extract, therefore classified as a "completely non-nicotine product." This classification allows Metatine products to bypass FDA PMTA (Pre-Market Tobacco Product Application) regulations and avoid tobacco taxes. As a result, the Spree Bar can be sold in convenience stores and other channels in nearly all 50 states in the U.S. at a lower price point, offering a variety of flavors in vapor form.

Henry also added that the reason for choosing Metatine over 6-methyl nicotine is that Metatine can better recreate the flavor, providing consumers with a higher quality experience.

2Firsts have confirmed that Spree Bar are still being sold in the US market. The product claims to be "nicotine-free" and has a Metatine concentration of 5%, with a price of around $6.95.

The applicants argue the March 31, 2023 delisting effectively deregulated vape products and created a prolonged gap until Act 852 took effect in October 2024.
