According to Louisiana First, a Louisiana lawmaker is pushing legislation that would ban the sale of vapor products near schools in the state.
The report said HB 302, introduced by Louisiana State Rep. Tehmi Chassion (Tehmi Chassion, D-Lafayette), would prohibit businesses from selling vapor products within 300 feet of schools. The report noted that vapor products include e-cigarettes or any cartridges containing vape liquid.
According to the report, the proposed law would measure the distance by “walking on the sidewalk,” from the nearest point on a school’s property to the nearest point of the business. The bill would also give the commissioner authority to modify how the distance is calculated, but the 300-foot limit would remain in place.
The report also noted that in 2023, the state released a directory of vapor products authorized by the Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) to be sold legally. Retailers must also have a permit or license to sell vaping products.
