Medical Marijuana Legalized for Purchase in North Carolina by Associated Press
Medical marijuana is now legally available for purchase in North Carolina, with the Eastern Band of Cherokee opening a dispensary.

According to a report from the Associated Press on April 21st, medical marijuana can now be legally purchased in North Carolina. The Eastern Band of Cherokee will be opening a marijuana dispensary this weekend.

 

On April 20th, also known as "420", many people with medical cards purchased cannabis products from Great Smoky Cannabis Co. on its opening day. The company is the first marijuana dispensary in the state.

 

The tribe has around 14,000 members and, as a federally recognized sovereign tribe, has the authority to approve marijuana-related legislation. However, in the rest of North Carolina, the use of marijuana remains illegal.

 

Republican Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd have expressed concerns to federal authorities about whether drug enforcement laws will continue to be enforced in pharmacies.

 

In recent years, legislation regarding medical marijuana has been repeatedly discussed in the North Carolina state legislature.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced its latest law enforcement results, saying that in "Operation Vape Trail", it seized more than 2.35 million illegal e-cigarette devices and cartridges in the week from September 15 to 19, also seized 115 firearms, more than $8.7 million in cash and assets, and arrested 106 people.
