Mexico's President to Propose Ban on E-Cigarettes by 2024

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador plans to propose a law banning e-cigarettes before stepping down in 2024.

According to the Spanish international news agency on December 14th, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his intention to propose a legislation banning e-cigarettes, also known as "vaping devices," before leaving office in 2024.

President Lopez Obrador has repeatedly threatened to take this measure, stating that these devices pose a threat to consumers' health.

He criticized Mexican Supreme Court Justice Javier Laynez Potisek for granting an exemption to a company regarding the ban on the sale of e-cigarettes.

President López Obrador emphasized, "Technology and science have proven that e-cigarettes harm adolescents, damaging their lungs and affecting their respiratory system. How can I sit idly by when Javier has made such a decision?" López Obrador guarantees that those who support continuing commercialization are "seeking profit," whereas Javier previously advocated for the repeal of the decree that suspended the sale of e-cigarettes due to its "impact on commerce and business relationships.

How should people deal with their health?" President Lopez Obrador then questioned, "We need to understand why these companies should be exempted.

Simultaneously, the World Health Organization (WHO) has urged governments worldwide to treat e-cigarettes similarly to tobacco and prohibit the sale of all types of e-cigarettes.
