Mississippi to Impose Consumption Tax on Disposable E-Cigarettes
Mississippi Senate passes SB 3105 bill to impose consumption tax on disposable e-cigarettes, proposed by GOP Senator Daniel Sparks.

According to a report from Law360 on March 28, the state of Mississippi in the United States will impose a consumer tax on disposable e-cigarettes.

 

On Wednesday, March 27, the Mississippi State Senate passed SB 3105 bill with a vote of 50 to 0. The bill, proposed by Republican Senator Daniel Sparks from Belmont on Monday, March 25, will now move to the House for consideration. This bill proposes a tax of 17 cents per "heating element" or "disposable," or 3.4 cents per pack of 20.

 

The bill will come into immediate effect after it is passed.

UK HMRC Urges Public to Report Suspicious Vape Shops in Crackdown on Tax Fraud, Money Laundering and Illicit Tobacco Sales
HM Revenue & Customs is urging members of the public to report vape shops, barber shops and other high-street businesses suspected of tax fraud, money laundering or other illegal activity, with informants not required to provide personal details. HMRC plans more than 30,000 interventions in 2026-27 targeting tax fraud, organised crime and illicit activity, including the sale of illegal vapes and tobacco. The push forms part of a broader UK effort to tackle organised crime on high streets, backed by a £30 million government enforcement programme.

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, the Democratic ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, has launched an investigation into flavored vape policy changes and requested records from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Reynolds American and Botanic Tonics. Mesa Underwriters Specialty Insurance Company has asked a federal court in Washington to declare that it has no duty to defend or indemnify vape distributor i5 Distribution in a product liability case involving an Elf Bar BC5000. The plaintiff alleges that the disposable vape caught fire and exploded in his pocket, causing severe burns and ultimately requiring an above-the-knee amputation of his left leg. MUSIC is relying on a tobacco, nicotine or nicotine replacement products exclusion and a premises limitation endorsement. The court has not ruled on the coverage dispute.
