New York Seeks Legislation to Eliminate Underage E-cigarette Usage

New York state legislators seek to ban e-cigarette sales to minors, with penalties up to $2500 for repeat violations.

According to Spectrum Local News on March 11th, the state of New York in the United States is seeking legislation to eliminate the phenomenon of minors using e-cigarettes.

The bill was introduced by Democratic Senator Monica Martinez from Long Island. She stated that the number of middle school students aged 11 to 14 who are vaping e-cigarettes is on the rise.

In the school environment, these products may inadvertently normalize smoking and tell our children that smoking is acceptable, when in fact it is not. This poses a serious challenge to their health and maintaining a healthy, safe, and conducive learning environment, which is what our school environment should be like.

The new legislation will prohibit the sale of e-cigarette products that resemble school supplies, toys, or are packaged in a way that appeals to minors. A first-time violation of the regulation will result in a fine of up to $1500, with subsequent violations carrying a $2500 fine each.

Congressman Charles Fall supports the bill.
