According to a report by Newtownbee on March 1, recently, the Newtown Police Department, in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), conducted enforcement cooperation to conduct surprise compliance checks on establishments in the city selling tobacco products or e-cigarettes. The purpose of this inspection is to determine whether these establishments are in compliance with the law prohibiting individuals under the age of 21 from purchasing e-cigarettes or tobacco products.
According to state law, retailers must check the photo identification of purchasers under the age of 30 before selling tobacco or e-cigarettes.
In the ongoing 21 undercover compliance checks, police found that two retailers were not adhering to Connecticut General Statutes section 53-344 (selling tobacco products to individuals under 21) or section 53-344b (selling e-cigarettes to individuals under 21). The employees at these locations selling prohibited items were fined $300.
The two sales points are located at the Wheels gas station on 47 Church Hill Road and the Citgo gas station on 131 Mount Pleasant Road.
