Ohio State Senate Overturns Veto on Local Tobacco Legislation
Ohio Senate overturns Governor Mike DeWine's veto, allowing local governments to enact stricter tobacco laws.

According to a report by American media outlet halfwheel on January 31, last week, the Ohio Senate overturned Governor Mike DeWine's veto, thereby allowing municipalities and counties to enact tobacco laws that are stricter than state laws.

 

According to reports, in December 2022, the Columbus City Council passed a ban on the sale of condiments in the capital city of Ohio. The ban, which lasted for 14 months, came to an end last week after the conclusion of the council's session.

 

With the implementation of the veto, the new state law will come into effect on April 24, rendering cities like Columbus unable to enforce their ban on flavored tobacco sales after that date.

 

The Columbus City Council is currently drafting a lawsuit targeting the state. City attorney Zach Klein stated that he hopes to challenge the law on the grounds of local autonomy.

A study by CDC Foundation researchers found no sustained decline in e-cigarette sales across Alabama, Oklahoma and Louisiana, the first three U.S. states to implement e-cigarette directory laws. Louisiana initially saw a significant sales decline, followed by a rebound and a persistent reduction in product availability. Sales also shifted from nontobacco-flavored disposables toward prefilled cartridges, with Vuse Alto driving much of the increase in menthol cartridges. By April 2025, unlisted products still accounted for more than half of e-cigarette nicotine sales in all three states.

The Commission has identified e-cigarette flavours, disposable vapes, tobacco heating devices, nicotine pouches, nicotine-free e-cigarettes, packaging and digital marketing among areas for possible new EU rules. National regulations already vary significantly across the bloc, a fragmentation the Commission says creates internal-market barriers and distorts competition. No formal revised TPD/TAD legislative text has yet been published, with the Commission currently indicating December 2026 for the legislative initiative.

California Lawmakers Pass Disposable Nicotine Vape Ban, With Sales Prohibition Set for 2028
According to CBS Los Angeles on August 27, 2026, California lawmakers have passed Assembly Bill 762, which would phase out disposable, battery-embedded nicotine vapes in the state. If signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, manufacturing and importation of the covered products would be prohibited beginning January 1, 2027, followed by a sales ban on January 1, 2028. Driven primarily by concerns over electronic waste, lithium-battery fires and environmental pollution, the legislation would further shift California’s legal vape market toward rechargeable, refillable or replaceable-pod devices.
