Peruvian Congress passes laws to control tobacco and nicotine consumption, including restrictions on sales and advertising to minors.

According to a recent report by El Comercio, the Peruvian Congress held its first full session vote on bills 3412, 3437, and 3732 regarding the regulation of tobacco and nicotine products consumption. The bills were passed with 73 votes in favor, 13 votes against, and 8 abstentions.

The bill clearly prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes or vaping devices to minors and imposes strict limitations on the advertising of these products. Additionally, health warnings covering 70% of the surface area of cigarette packaging, an increase from the previous 50%, will be required. Health warnings must also be included on e-cigarette packaging.

Chairman of the Health Committee Luis Picón Quedo emphasized that this legislative proposal is based on the right to health, aiming to reduce the serious consequences of tobacco and nicotine consumption and prevent addiction in the new generation of consumers.

Chairman of the Economic Committee, Ilich López Ureña, stated that the bill can protect the health of citizens, especially minors.

The text introduces regulations, information, and educational policies, as well as restrictions on the consumption of tobacco, nicotine, and their alternatives. Additionally, the legislation prohibits the advertisement of tobacco products and limits advertising targeting minors. It also explicitly bans the sale of tobacco, nicotine, and their alternatives to minors.
