Preventing Drug Abuse: Comprehensive Policy and Action Plan
The Sindh Provincial Health Department and its partners have launched a comprehensive policy and action plan to tackle drug addiction in the province.

According to a recent report by Pakistani media outlet Nation, the Health Department of Sindh province and the Sindh Reduction of Drug Demand and Prevention of Drug Abuse Working Group, in collaboration with other partners, have jointly launched a comprehensive policy and action plan to address the increasingly alarming issue of drug addiction in the province.

 

The new policy, titled "Preventing Drug Abuse, Treatment Policies, and Implementation Plans," has been announced by the Department of Health Sciences at Tao University, and has received support from the Pakistan Institute for Lifestyle and Learning (PILL) and the University of Manchester.

 

According to members of the working group and senior mental health expert Dr. Salman Shehzad, the highlights of the new policy include the establishment of a 24/7 helpline, the formation of an anti-tobacco and anti-drug committee, and providing support for rehabilitation centers to enhance public awareness about drug addiction and eliminate stigmatization and discrimination.

 

He emphasized the need to promote collaboration among stakeholders and use it as the foundation for evidence-based research.

Gallup’s 2026 Consumption Habits survey tracked nicotine pouch use for the first time. The survey found that 11% of U.S. adults reported smoking cigarettes in the past week, 9% reported vaping, and 4% reported using nicotine pouches. Cigarette smoking remained near Gallup’s long-term low, while adult vaping rates stayed relatively stable in recent years.

The Commission has identified e-cigarette flavours, disposable vapes, tobacco heating devices, nicotine pouches, nicotine-free e-cigarettes, packaging and digital marketing among areas for possible new EU rules. National regulations already vary significantly across the bloc, a fragmentation the Commission says creates internal-market barriers and distorts competition. No formal revised TPD/TAD legislative text has yet been published, with the Commission currently indicating December 2026 for the legislative initiative.

The FDA has authorized four additional on! nicotine pouches, bringing the U.S. total to 30. The decision marks another outcome of the agency’s nicotine pouch review pilot, whose communication and review practices are now being applied more broadly across the category. It also extends Helix’s authorized portfolio from on! PLUS to the earlier on! line. NAS 2026 | FDA CTP Director Says PMTA Pathway Is “Predicated on Tobacco Harm Reduction”
At the 2026 New Approaches Summit in New York, FDA Center for Tobacco Products Director Bret Koplow said the PMTA pathway is “predicated on tobacco harm reduction.” He outlined four CTP priorities: youth prevention, helping adults quit or switch to lower-risk products, improving relative-risk communication, and reducing unauthorized products. Koplow also addressed flavored e-cigarettes, public risk perceptions, industry credibility and efforts to make PMTA reviews more efficient and predictable.

Iowa has begun enforcing its vape registry law, requiring vape products to be registered before they can be legally sold in the state. The move follows a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit to lift an injunction that had blocked enforcement. Retailers have warned that tighter product availability rules could increase pressure on vape shops. Australia-China Operation Dismantles Tobacco Smuggling Network: 112 Containers, 60 Arrests and A$92 Million in Illicit Tobacco
According to The Maritime Executive on August 19, 2026, the Australian Border Force (ABF) and China’s Anti-Smuggling Bureau of General Administration of China Customs worked together to dismantle an international illicit tobacco smuggling network targeting Australia. According to information released by ABF on August 20, sustained information sharing and cooperation led to investigations into 112 shipping containers, with 91 found to contain illicit tobacco. Authorities seized more than 60 million cigarettes and 60 kilograms of loose-leaf tobacco, representing more than A$92 million in unpaid duties. More than 60 people suspected of involvement in the network were arrested in China.
