Rising Concerns: Illegal E-cigarette Sales Targeting Youth in Luton

Fake e-cigarette epidemic hits Luton with attractive packaging and excessive e-liquid posing danger for youth; imports mostly from China.

According to lutontoday, there has been a recent outbreak of counterfeit e-cigarette incidents in the city of Luton, England. These e-cigarettes are particularly appealing to adolescents and children, and some of them contain an excessive amount of e-liquid, equivalent to 500 traditional cigarettes. A government report warns that certain shop owners are even promoting these e-cigarettes to children as young as ten or eleven years old.

According to the data on tobacco control strategy by the Luton government, there are a total of 119 places in the Luton area engaged in illegal tobacco activities, with the majority concentrated in the city center and Berry Park area. The sale and distribution of illegal tobacco and e-cigarettes have become a nationwide issue, affecting sales to underage individuals.

According to a report, the trading standards department sent these illegal e-cigarettes to a laboratory for analysis, and the results revealed excessive levels of lead and cadmium elements. It was found that the majority of these illegal e-cigarettes were imported from China, with nicotine and e-liquid contents exceeding the legal limits set in the United Kingdom.

Furthermore, since 2021, the trade standards department has uncovered 13,378 cases of illegal e-cigarette incidents. Through interventions at the local level and successful court rulings, the number of illegal e-cigarettes in the Luton area has significantly decreased, and store owners also have a better understanding of their responsibilities.
