Singapore Authorities Arrest Over 2200 for E-cigarette Offences in Q1

Over 2200 individuals arrested in Singapore for e-cigarette offenses in the first quarter, marking a surge in illegal activity.

According to a report by the Xinhua News Agency on April 9th, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) in Singapore announced that over 2200 people have been arrested in the first quarter of this year on charges of possessing or using e-cigarettes.

The illegal use of e-cigarettes in Singapore is reaching epidemic proportions. In the first three months of this year, over 2200 people have been arrested by authorities for possessing or using e-cigarettes. Additionally, the Health Sciences Authority in Singapore has seized e-cigarettes and their components worth 7 million Singapore dollars (approximately 5.2 million US dollars).

The black market for e-cigarettes in Singapore appears to be expanding. A report shows that last year 7,838 people in Singapore were arrested for possessing or using e-cigarettes, a 60% increase compared to 2022. The Health Sciences Authority points out that e-cigarettes contain harmful chemicals such as fine particulate matter and carcinogens, and the maximum fine for possessing, using, or purchasing e-cigarettes can reach $2,000 Singapore dollars (about $1,487 USD).

Spain’s Socialist Party (PSOE) has submitted a legal amendment to the Congress proposing a gradual reduction of the excise duty on nicotine pouches.
