Rising E-Cigarette Use in Singapore Despite Traditional Tobacco Decline
Singapore traditional cigarette consumption declines as e-cigarette use rises, according to The Straits Times report on March 26.

According to a report by The Straits Times on March 26, traditional cigarette consumption in Singapore is decreasing, while the use of e-cigarettes is on the rise.

 

According to the study, the average number of cigarettes smoked per week by smokers in Singapore has decreased from 72 in the third quarter of 2021 to 56 in the fourth quarter of 2023. During the same period, the usage rate of alternative products such as e-cigarettes has increased from 3.9% to 5.2%.

 

Starting from the second quarter of 2022, the gradual decrease in weekly cigarette consumption can be partly attributed to an increase in occasional smokers, while the number of regular smokers has decreased accordingly. In a survey conducted from December 16th to 29th, 2023, it was found that the proportion of occasional smokers increased from 1.2% in the third quarter of 2021 to 3.2% in the last quarter of 2023. During the same period, the number of former smokers has also increased.

 

It is worth noting that despite Singapore's ban on the use of devices such as e-cigarettes and vaporizers since 2018, the usage rates of e-cigarettes remain high.

 

The Singapore Ministry of Health and Health Sciences Authority announced in December 2023 that they are strengthening enforcement and education efforts against e-cigarettes to prevent them from taking root in Singapore. During the same month, authorities identified 1,656 cases related to vaporizers, with a significant number of users purchasing devices through online and overseas suppliers.
