"Snus" Goes Viral on TikTok, Raising Concern of Irish Parents

Irish parents express concern as dangerous tobacco product "snus" gains popularity on TikTok, potentially impacting local youths' lives.

According to The Times, an Irish media outlet, Irish parents have discovered a dangerous tobacco product called "snus" gaining widespread attention on the TikTok platform. The Google search volume for snus in Ireland reached its peak last month. Moreover, eight web pages selling nicotine pouches on TikTok have been identified, which is already impacting the lives of local young people.

Nicotine pouches, a type of dry snus originating from Sweden, are illegal to purchase or sell in Ireland but are permissible to use. Users typically place them between their upper lip and gums, allowing nicotine to be directly absorbed into the bloodstream.

Nicotine pouches, pronounced as "snus," have a significantly higher nicotine content, nearly triple that of regular cigarettes. Research has found a correlation between nicotine pouches and conditions such as heart disease, oral cancer, and respiratory diseases.
